With a wealth of music-making activities for early years children in South Gloucestershire aged 4-7, TAJMC offers something for everyone. With three classes based on school year groups, children can have their musical imaginations and creativity sparked and developed in a fun and educational way, with activities led by experienced tutors.
Thornbury Area Junior Music Centre (TAJMC) meets at Marlwood School in Alveston, South Gloucestershire on Saturday mornings during term time. At the end of each Term: all musicians are involved in a show-case or concert for their parents and families.
We offer three different classes of musical fun:
The Foundation Class is for reception aged children (age 4 / 5). The class includes singing, playing and exploring percussion instruments, and instroduces children to music and performing in a fun and energetic way.
The Music Makers Class is for children in years 1 & 2. The activities follow on from those of the Foundation Class, but it is not necessary for children to have taken that class first. The activities allow the children to develop their skills in singing, sound exploration, improve their listening responses and performance skills. There is an emphasis on playing tuned percussion instruments. This class is a great spring-board into our 'Let's Play' programme.
Primarily aimed at children in years 2 & 3, this class not only provides an opportunity for young musicians to receive tuition on the recorder, it allows them to continue to develop their musical skills in a rounded way. Activites in this class include singing, an introduction to the orchestral instruments and other music centre groups, and basic composition. This class is a great spring-board into our 'Let's Play' programme.

The children attending the Junior Music Centre will also have the opportunity of watching and listening to the intermediate and senior orchestras from the Thornbury Area Music Centre whilst they rehearse at Marlwood School – this will give them more awareness of the types of instruments that would be available to learn once they are a little older.
